Welcome back to the final day of our challenge goddess!

On Day 1, you learned why artificially fragranced products are potentially toxic to your body. If the goal is to treat your body as the sacred temple that it is, then you must be aware of what you are bringing it in contact with. Then yesterday, on Day 2, you got the opportunity to experience aroma through the practice of aromatherapy. You compared the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual sensations received from natural fragrances to that of simulated fragrances. By doing so, you etched into your body's records the tangible and intangible difference between experiencing aroma naturally vs artificially. 

 

What kinds of thoughts or emotions came up for you during the challenge? Are you excited for what comes next?

It feels most fitting to spend our final day taking the lessons we have learned from the past two days and putting them into action. And believe it or not, goddess, we learned a lot. 

Today's goal, then, is to help you make the shift to a more "natural aroma lifestyle" with ease and intention. You will do this by crafting your own aromatherapy face cleanser with a few simple ingredients. Then you will discover how to use it as you develop your own unique sacred beauty ritual. 

 

You can think of a sacred beauty ritual as a natural beauty routine infused with lunar intentions. It incorporates key aspects of the divine feminine in that it cultivates mindful movements. It is the antithesis of a fast-paced, action-oriented world because it asks us to pause and be fully present in the experience. To do each and every step with intention and awareness. And as you do so, you will simultaneously be practicing how to rest in the moment so that your mind, emotions, and body can all be reinvigorated.

 

It's important to remember that what you do as part of your sacred beauty routine is not nearly as important as how you are doing it. Are you rushing as you clean your face? Is your mind so worried about whether you are going to be late that you fail to notice that refreshing feeling of washing away all of the dirt that has accumulated? Of literally and metaphorically releasing that which no longer serves you? 

Or are you using this time to cleanse your skin and your mind? Are you using your beauty routine to receive sacred rest? To enliven your soul and uplift your spirit? If not, read on to see how you can transform your beauty routine from basic to sacred.

 

How to Craft a Sacred Beauty Routine

 

Crafting a sacred beauty routine is quite simple in concept, but a little harder to execute. That's because it requires you to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the art of bringing your full and undivided attention to the present moment. When you get lost in your thoughts, your mind tends to filter out all of the information it is constantly receiving through your five senses and only keep what it deems as important. Sights, sounds, and smells can all be dulled in terms of what you are perceiving. But when you pause, and force your mind to be present in the current moment, you will notice more sensations than you would have before. Becoming more mindful, like anything else, take practice, but the reward is absolutely worth it.

In order to develop your mindfulness practice, you can try incorporating any or all of the following activities into your regimen:

  • Bring your attention to your breath. They say you cannot take a breath in the past nor in the future. So, bringing your awareness to your breath is an excellent way to train your mind to focus on what you are sensing in the moment. Try inhaling deeply for 4 seconds as you apply product, pause for one second, and then exhale for 8 seconds as you empty your breath.

  • Focus on physical sensations. As you apply products to your face, allow yourself to notice what it feels like on your skin. How does it feel to touch your skin? How does the product smell? What does it look like? What is the texture like? Does your skin feel smooth and moisturized or dry?

  • Express gratitude for one thing that you did in the last 24 hours.

  • Infuse a mantra into your routine. Try any of the these: ​​

    • I have the power to renew my energy mentally, physically, and spiritually. 

    • I choose to operate from a spirit of rest and receptivity.

    • I give myself permission to savor the present moment.

    • I am a beautiful, sacred woman.

    • Everything that I need to be happy is within me.

    • I deserve to create and enjoy moments of lightness throughout my day.

  • Check in with yourself emotionally. Ask yourself, "How am I feeling right now?" Then give yourself permission to feel those emotions without judgment. Try saying this, "I am aware of my emotions, and I understand that I am experiencing (insert emotion here) right now. I am choosing to acknowledge it." Do this with each emotion that you may be feeling. Naming it can help improve your self-expression.

 

Small additions like these will transform your beauty routine into a ritual. And little by little, they will transform you as well.

So on to the recipe...finally! This recipe of course is aromatherapeutic. It is scented naturally with essential oils. Essential oils are extremely potent, so always remember less is more when using. This cleanser is meant to gently clean your skin without stripping it and all while soothing your mind!

Recipe for a Simple Aromatherapy Face Cleanser

What you will need:

- A small bottle or jar that can hold at least 4 oz of liquid (We love recycling so if you have an empty glass bottle around, you can clean and reuse it!)

- 1/2 cup distilled water

- 1 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of Castile soap (unscented is best)

- 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil

- 1/4 teaspoon of sweet almond oil

- 6 drops of either lavender, rose, or chamomile essential oil (or a combination of the three). If you would like it a to smell a little stronger, you can add up to 6 more drops of essential oils

Mix all of your ingredients into your bottle and shake well to combine. You might choose to hold it in one hand and create an intention around how you want it to help you feel mentally and emotionally. And just like magic, goddess, you have yourself a scentual aromatherapeutic facial wash.

*Note, this simple recipe for a natural product contains no artificial additives. Therefore, you may notice the water and oil separate. This is normal as water and oil do not mix together. :)

This formula should yield you about a 0.25% to 0.50 % essential oil dilution ratio, or ratio of essential oils to other ingredients. You want to keep this ratio in mind as you experiment with your formulation because essential oils are extremely potent. It is best to keep this ratio low by starting out with fewer drops, then testing on a small patch of skin. After use, you can store it in a cool, dry area. This MIY formula should last you up to 1 month.

The Challenge

 

Alright, goddess. Your final challenge has arrived!

Craft your aromatherapy face wash using the ingredients and instructions above. Once you have made it, use it to help elevate your beauty regimen. Below you will see an example of how to do just that. You can use it as a starting point for transforming your beauty routine into your own sacred beauty routine -- one that honors the goddess within you.

Suggested Use For Your Sacred Beauty Routine

1.    Remove any makeup from your face using a natural makeup remover product.
2.    Apply your aromatherapy face cleanser to a wet face and methodically massage it into your skin. 
3.    Inhale deeply for 4 seconds through your nostrils. Pause for a second. Then exhale completely through your nostrils. 
4.    Notice how it smells. Notice how your skin feels. Does it feel cleaner, less oily? What about how the wash makes you feel emotionally? Relaxed, relieved, refreshed?
5.    Concentrate on your intention for your sacred beauty routine as you continue to gently massage it into your skin.
6.    Rinse off and follow up with a floral water, hydrosol, or toner
7.    Lastly, apply a facial serum and/or face moisturizer and acknowledge yourself for making time

Be sure to journal or meditate for five minutes on how your face cleanser came out, what you noticed, and how it made you feel. And like before, be sure to post on IG stories something you are really grateful to have learned today using the hashtag #sacredaromachallenge . 

Wow! This one was a doozy, but in the best of ways! These last 3 days have been jam packed with a lot of information and hopefully a lot of wisdom. Use what you you learned during the course of this entire challenge to rethink the concept of self-care. Make a habit of remembering the connection between your mind, body, and spirit as you go about your day. All three of these aspects of wellbeing are connected, and when one or more is exhausted or neglected we really feel it. So, develop a small daily practice of tuning inward, even if it's the 5 to 10 minutes you spend on your beauty routine.

 Never forget that true beauty is eternal. It is goes beyond the surface. It is your soul-being, your individualized essence. Come back to this truth. And when life's waves rise and fall, use it as your anchor.
