Beauty x Aromatherapy: How Your Products Can Affect Your Health

How important is self-care, and how does the beauty industry play a pivotal role in our overall health?

By now, I'm sure you have heard the saying: "You are what you eat." It's meant to convey the reality that the kinds of food you put in your body will either improve your health, maintain your health, or lead you away from good health.

Then science began to show us that it's not only what you put in your body but also what you put on your body that can affect your health. This is because our skin is our body's largest organ, and it's quite literally exposed to the entire world and the elements on a 24/7 basis.

Did you know that a study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that American women, on average, apply 12 different products per day comprised of 168 different chemicals?* Normally any kind of toxin that enters our bodies is filtered naturally by our liver and kidneys. However, some of the toxins found in these chemicals have molecular structures small enough to penetrate the skin barrier and become absorbed into the blood stream or lymphatic system, completely bypassing our natural filtration process. Add to this the fact that scientists are still not sure to what degree penetration and/or absorption of skin care products occurs. That's even more reason to be concerned about the kinds of products we are using on our bodies regularly!

Now think about this: According to the EWG, since 2009, almost 600 cosmetics manufacturers have admitted to using 88 chemicals in 73,000 products linked to cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm!** Every single day, on average 12 times per day, we are possibly rubbing these ingredients into our bodies. And thanks to a lack of federal regulation, store shelves everywhere are saturated with these kinds of products, from super markets to your local pharmacies!

All of this exposure to chemical and artificial ingredients is harming our physical health. But the health concerns should not stop there. Because our physical health can oftentimes be the outwardly manifestation of mental and emotional health issues going on inside of us.

A good is example is stress. If you suffer from chronic high levels of stress, it could lead to physical dis-ease such as depression, stroke, diabetes, and heart problems. While it is true that a lack of good physical health could lead to these issues, there are studies out that show, in fact, that we may be looking at this relationship in reverse. That is because science is just now catching up to a very important fact that eastern medicine has known for thousands of years: our mental health and our emotional health are directly linked to our physical health.

So how does aromatherapy come into play here? Well, aromatherapy uses essential oils (plant oil essences) to transport signals to the limbic system in our brains. The limbic system acts like the emotional control center of our brains. Depending on the kind of essential oil used, aromatherapy can achieve the desired effect of altering our emotions or our thought patterns by way of our sense of smell. When we are able to alter our emotions or our thought patterns, we are then able to alter our perception of reality. As John Wooden is famously quoted, “Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.”

I use clary sage, a key ingredient in our Nova rollerball and Nova moon mist. Clary sage is known to help ease nerves and/or anxiety. Oftentimes, while working, I diffuse this essential oil or roll on Nova when I am feeling overwhelmed or worried that I won’t meet tight deadlines. At the root of those worries is fear that my boss will think of me as incapable. But as I take in the aroma through my nostrils, the limbic system in my brain is stimulated. It is essentially being signaled to release a stabilizing effect on my emotions so that I go from a state of worry and overwhelm to a state of relaxation and peace.

This helps me to transform my thoughts from those rooted in worry to those rooted in more positive feelings. My thoughts stop racing and my mind stops adding things to a never-ending checklist in my head. I then feel confident enough to believe I am actually capable of completing quality work in time to meet my deadlines. I start to see this as another opportunity to show my my ability to follow through rather than another opportunity to let my team down.

So let’s recap. We know that what you put on your skin matters to your physical health. We know that your physical health is a direct manifestation, in many cases, of your mental and/or emotional health. And we know that aromatherapy has the ability to positively affect your mental and/or emotional health when used properly.

So here is where beauty comes into the conversation. If you choose the right products, your beauty and skincare routine can also have the ability to positively impact your mental and/or emotional health which, in turn, has the ability to positively impact your actual physical health. Let me say that again: YOUR CHOICE OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS CAN POSITIVELY IMPACT YOUR MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. And in this way, you are actually taking care of your whole health. By switching to beauty products that harness the power of aromatherapy, you can actually attack dis-ease at the source. And all while improving the health and vitality of your skin!
