April is National Minority Health Month!

As a Black woman owned business, Stellar Moon LLC is proud to celebrate National Minority Health Month. This month, we would like to highlight the importance of mental health and the role it plays in keeping us happy, healthy, and connected.

That's why we want to share 5 tips for maintaining your mental health.

1. Filter out Mental Fluctuations

In yoga, there is a practice of filtering out mental fluctuations, also known as chitta vritti in Sanskrit. These mental fluctuations block out absolute truth with subjective truths and opinions. It is often used to help yogis identify mental blockages so that they can overcome their fears. This practice can be used both on and off the mat though.

The reality is that each one of us is a (divine) being having a human experience. Anything outside of that reality is completely subject to misinterpretation. We all walk through this life carrying perceptions that we have gained through our various lived experiences. We commit our own personal experiences to memory, create a story around those memories, and then we use those perceptions to decipher the world around us.

Just remember, the next time you are upset or stressed to ask yourself: What is absolute truth? Then remind yourself that you are a (divine) being having a human experience. How you choose to interpret any experience you have is your choice. You can choose to be upset, or you can make the choice to extend forgiveness to yourself, others, or the situation.

2. Meditate

People often think that you have to sit down in a quiet place alone and empty their minds of all thoughts in order to meditate properly. This is simply not true. You can meditate just about anywhere, anytime.

The purpose of meditation is really to sit and be present with your thoughts without judgment. It is meant to foster detachment from your thoughts. Allow them to come and go as they please. You can acknowledge them, and then let them pass by, like how you might smile at a stranger in passing without giving them much further thought. In doing so, you avoid assigning a good or bad category to your thoughts.

This practice is also applicable to life because life comes in waves. When we designate certain experiences as good and others as bad, it inherently causes us to want to cling to the good and fear the bad. Instead, remember what we mentioned above. We are each a (divine) being having a human experience, none of which are really good or bad in the grand scheme of things. Next try meditating when you are in the grocery store, at work, or out and about and see how it can improve your mood.

3. Go for a Walk

You probably hear this a lot. Walking is an excellent outlet for relieving stress, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing blood pressure.

Try taking a walk around your neighborhood, or even around your home, for at least 30 minutes each day. If you have a fur baby, take them with you! Make it a family event and take the entire household if you like. If the weather or your work schedule does not permit, consider using an under-the-desk treadmill like this one to get your steps in as well.

4. Remember to breathe

This may seem like an obvious one, but it's probably the fastest way to calm down your nerves in a tense situation. In fact, deep breathing should be used in combination with any of these tips really.

Science tells us that slow, deep inhalation and exhalation triggers our parasympathetic nervous system which helps to calm our body down when it is in fight or flight mode. It is also shown to help lower anxiety, stress, and a rapid heartbeat, as well as combat any racing thoughts you may have going on in your mind.

5. Diffuse Essential Oils
